TN811 Training Opportunities
Our Safe Digging Training has been provided to professionals across many industries, including:
Excavation and construction crews, plumbing and landscaping professionals, public works departments, utility and locating contractors, municipal and county agencies, homeowners’ associations, and many others dedicated to preventing underground utility damages.
Course Description:
This course provides an overview of the Tennessee 811 notification system and incorporates application of the Tennessee Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act and best practices when working near underground utilities.
Core Topics Include:
- Tennessee 811 Operations: Ticket creation, notification timelines, excavation start procedures, and emergency ticket protocols.
- Legal Framework: Key definitions, responsibilities, exemptions, and reporting requirements under Tennessee law.
- Risk Management: Recognizing underground utilities, adherence to Tolerance/Safety Zones, and proactive safety measures.
- Best Practices: Identification of utility markings, safe excavation methods, and application of reasonable care around underground facilities.
- Regulatory Processes: Common violations, complaint procedures, and the role of the Tennessee Public Utility Commission (TPUC).
- Legislative Updates: Recent amendments and ongoing developments with the Tennessee Underground Utility Damage Prevention Act.
Our Safe Digging Practices for Water Professionals covers the same topics as our Safe Digging Training but is certified by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Water and Wastewater Certification Board for 1 hour of continuing education credit toward any classification (Activity #26067). A report of continuing education activity roster will be provided to participants and submitted by Tennessee 811 for attendee credit.
All courses include damage case studies, discussion, and opportunities for student engagement.

Pipeline Safety Training
Excavator Course and First Responder CORE (Coordinated Response Exercise)
Paradigm, in partnership with local pipeline and gas distribution companies and Tennessee 811, is offering two free safety training courses for excavators and first responders throughout Tennessee from September through October in 2026. The Excavator Course focuses on pipeline damage prevention, safe excavation practices, and the responsibilities of those working near underground facilities.
The First Responder CORE (Coordinated Response Exercise) provides updated gas pipeline safety information while helping first responders build relationships with local pipeline operators and gas distribution companies. CORE training includes a virtual incident scenario and on-scene chemistry and hazardous materials basics.
Both courses also include information on safe digging practices in Tennessee, along with opportunities for networking and interaction with local industry representatives.
